- Strong Man Tricks Which You Can Do (1931)

[6 pages] UNUSUAL muscular development is not essential to the successful performance of the majority of the strong man tricks. The big-muscle man who struts about on our vaudeville stage, flexes his biceps, and assumes striking poses to display his Herculean proportions to better advantage does not often depend upon physical power for the completion of the amazing and spectacular exhibitions which he undertakes. He frequently relies upon technique, knack, and the knowledge that certain parts of the body, especially the long bones, can withstand severe strain and pressure. Do not assume that these statements are intended to disparage the genuine strong man. On the contrary--there is one qualification that you must possess in order to imitate his demonstrations -- that is, strength. Only one type of person can successfully compete with the real strong man and that individual is another genuine strong man....keep reading
- The Medicine Ball as a Health Builder - Part 1 (1905)

[4 pages] The medicine ball relative to the building of one's health, is one of the strongest features connected with physical culture; yet it has been sadly overlooked, and at the present time, too little importance is placed upon its worth.
There is hardly a muscle, fibre or tendon, attachment, air cell, or blood vessel that cannot be reached by proper and judicious work with this ball,--and yet how few really know what the medicine ball is. It is most surprising to me when I talk with some physical culture enthusiasts (even those who have been working along some line of physical culture for two or three years), that they actually do not know what sort of an object you have reference to when you speak of the medicine ball; they do not seem to know whether it is something to eat or something 'to wear around the neck on a chain....keep reading

[83 pages] One of the first centers of physical culture and serious training was Hemenway Gymnasium at Harvard University in the late 1800's and early 1900's which was under the guidance of Dr. Dudley Allen Sargent. Sargent wrote this incredibly interesting guide as a means of illustrating the proper usage of the many strength machines that he devised for the student body to train on and build their strength. - Manual of Instruction in The Use of Dumb Bells, Indian Clubs and Other Exercises (1880)

"In presenting this little volume, I do not profess to say that I am its sole author, for I have too much respect for those writers who are older and wiser than I am, as not to adopt some of their maxims and profit by their long experience. I may humbly say, however, that I have made every effort to gather from the very best authorities and bring together in convenient form such information and substance, which I hope will go to make this a book acceptable for the purpose for which it is intended."...keep reading
