- The York Hand Balancing Course No. 1

[46 pages] DID YOU EVER NOTICE when you see a group of strong men together that, sooner or later, they take time out for some handbalancing? Handbalancing to a bodybuilder, a weightlifter or any barbell man, is as natural as a duck taking to water. 1 think one reason for this is the fact that barbell trained men are so much stronger than others that the difficult balancing, stunts are to them very easy. Furthermore, lifting barbells has given them unusual co-ordination which is very necessary to the would-be balancer....keep reading
- A Muscle Has Four Sides (1982)

[30 pages] All the concepts I have advanced over the years have initially met with a certain amount of skepticism, usually because initially they seem too simple to achieve the results desired in the time given. Yet eventually, sometimes twenty-five years later, these concepts are accepted around the world as standard training axioms. I will tell you now what the secret of success really is. Believe that the course I give will work, and it will. If you have doubts, and don't put everything into it, then you will find it won't work. The following course, A Muscle Has Four Sides, is based upon the fact that different exercises develop different parts of a given muscle. By doing four exercises, one for each part of the muscle, you will achieve the fastest possible growth. Combine this with proper workout frequency, and correct nutrition that I give you, and the muscle will grow at the fastest possible rate. Doing more will not improve results, in fact if you do the exercises properl...keep reading

[36 pages] Now here's something you don't see every day: in 1956, Russia published this yearbook highlighting their weightlifting program. Many great champions and training areas are highlighted. It also just so happens that a contingent of champion American lifters famously visited Russia that year as well and are included as well. You would have to go DEEP behind the Iron Curtain to have a look at this fascinating publication.

- Are You Making Full Use of Contraction? (1962)

[7 pages] LIKE THE words of the Old song: Everybody's Doing it- -- doing what? -- practicing Functional Isometric Contraction. In all of history, it is doubtful if anything, except perhaps the Hula Hoop and the Twist, was taken up by so many people in such a short time.
The Hula Hoop did not last long, the Twist will go too, but Functional Isometric Contraction training will go on and on; it is here for good, not just for today and tomorrow. It is truly a wonderful form of training as it brings sensational results and brings them quickly in only One Minute a Day....keep reading

- Jiu Jitsu - A Manual of The Science (1918)

[78 pages] "JIU JITSU is a a system of physical training, also a system of defence and attack. It is built upon a knowledge of anatomy which embodies nerve pressure in different parts of the body, also pressure on the different blood vessels and a thorough knowledge of locking bones of the opponent who, when placed in such a position, if he were to exert his strength would be made to use it against himself.
It also comprises a series of very cleverly arranged trips which upsets the equilibrium of an opponent. The trips are applied by quick movements of the leg, kicking your opponent in various parts of the body..."...keep reading

- The Science and Art of Physical Development: Hints on The Sandow System (1902)

[64 pages] Any system of Physical Culture will prove of little benefit to the student, if, at the outset, he or she fails to understand the correct working of that System, and it is for the assistance of thousands of students of the Sandow System who are unable to obtain advice or instruction as to the correct way of performing the exercises that I produce this small book of hints....keep reading
- The Mighty Atom - His Philosophy of Health (1962)

[10 pages] "Many stories have been written about Mr. Joseph M. Greenstein, professionally known as "The Mighty Atom." If I were to write about his life and the various feats of strength he has performed, it would indeed be repetitious. Sig Klein's excellent article in his "Strong Men I Remember Best" series in the June, 1958 issue of Strength and Health magazine covered a great deal about this amazing man.
But I feel that something has been left out of all that has been written about The Mighty Atom. This something reaches very deeply into the spirit of his personality and is profoundly reflected in the genuineness of his philosophy and work."...keep reading

- Autobiographical Sketches of a Strength-Seeker (1862)

[24 pages] Dr. Windship was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts on January 3rd, 1834. He was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1854, M.D. 1857), and in June of 1859, gave his first lecture on physical training with an exhibition of heavy lifting in Music Hall, Boston, where he lifted nine hundred and twenty nine pounds of dead weight, put a dumb-bell weighing one hundred pounds over his head and shouldered a full barrel of flour. Thereafter, he repeated these feats and help spread the popularity of heavy lifting throughout the northern states and Canada. In the 1860's and early 70's he conducted a private gymnasium on Washington street in Boston, next door to the Boston Theatre. The following is his most influential article and appeared in The Atlantic Monthly Magazine in January of 1862...keep reading
- The Indian Hercules (1915)

[7 pages] Some time ago, when I was stopping at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel at Bombay, a friend took my breath away by telling me that he proposed to take me that night to see the weirdest and most wonderful performance in the world.told me that I would see, with my own eyes, an elephant step on the stomach of a man, who would immediately get up, unhurt by the tons of dead weight concentrated on his solar plexus....keep reading
- The Two Hands Curl

"I don't think any part of the body is as impressive as a fully developed upper arm. Today, more than ever, the trend is for ever larger arms and the development displayed by many of the foremost strength athletes is truly remarkable.
These men specialized in a great variety of exercises that influence the muscles of the upper arm. You can be sure that one of the exercises that would top the list would be the Two Hands Curl.
In my opinion the greatest single exercise to develop maximum size and strength of the biceps is the curl with barbell. I am aware that there are numerous curling movements, each affecting the front of the upper arm in a slightly different manner. I recommend, the trainee to include some of these ‘movements in his routine."...keep reading
