  1. Special Boxing Course (1959)
    Joe Weider
    Special Boxing Course &##x28;1959&##x29;

    [12 pages] "I believe I have definitely proved to you by now that my greatest desire is to help build you he-man muscles and a he-man's strength, and to teach you how to think and act like a real he-man! To help you build strong muscles, yet fail to teach you the many useful -- and sometimes necessary - things you can do with them, would be to fail you as your instructor. It is with this in mind that I send you this Special Bonus Boxing Course, for surely there is no re-blooded he-man who doesn't want to learn how to protect himself or to valiently defend a weaker person when he must."...keep reading

  1. Ideal Physical Culture (1900)
    William Bankier
    Ideal Physical Culture &##x28;1900&##x29;

    [104 pages] Here's a little-known title that you probably weren't aware of: Ideal Physical Culture by Apollo aka William Bankier aka The Scottish Hercules. Originally published in 1900, Apollo provides material on a number of useful topics including a bit of autobiographical information, his favorite developmental exercises, and rather rare for the time, a great deal of dietary information. If you want to find out how to eat like a strongman, this is will give you the straight info from the man himself. (And unsurprisingly, the advice is just as valid well over a century later.)...keep reading

  1. A Driving Force Goes His Own Way (1985)
    Del Martin
    A Driving Force Goes His Own Way &##x28;1985&##x29;

    [3 pages] As A KID, Arthur Jones would sneak around the back of an Oklahoma barn to lift a barbell, dreaming of becoming a facsimile of Atlas balancing the world on his shoulders. He never made it. "By other people's standards, I produced unbelievable results," he recalls. "My legs grew rapidly. My arms exploded into double their size. But some sections of my body did not grow." Jones concluded his genes were wrong. Also wrong, he decided, was the equipment. A barbell was a static weight; it did not become lighter or heavier to fully exercise a muscle as the muscle moved. It did not offer variable resistance. "I realized all this in the 1930s," Jones says. "It doesn't take me years to discover that something doesn't work. If something doesn't work, I will try something else. Eventually, I will discover either something that does work or a bunch of things that don't."...keep reading

  1. WRESTLING - An Ideal Exercise (1911)
    George Bothner
    WRESTLING - An Ideal Exercise &##x28;1911&##x29;

    "...there is no sport known to the athletic world that is more conducive to health and symmetry than wrestling. Its practice exercises every muscle, and stimulates the action of every organ. Because of the health that it brings into being, it makes for good temper, an active brain and a rounded personality. As fellow expert Frederick Toombs says, "Wrestling is an unequaled pastime, an unsurpassed means of self-defence, a developer par excellence of the body and an unfailing aid to health," and I stand ready to declare that it deserves the praise of that authority." ...keep reading

    Rules and Definitions for Competitive Lifting &##x28;1938&##x29;

    You won't see one of these very often: The Rules and Definitions for Competitive lifting in the Australian Weight-Lifters' Association, circa 1938. As noted by the inscription on the first page, this rare booklet was a gift to Peary Rader from Mark Pervino, secretary of the Australian Weight-Lifters' Association.

    These were the days when there were SEVEN competitive Olympic weightlifting movements: Press, Snatch, Clean and Jerk, One Hand snatch (right and left) and One Hand Clean and Jerk (right and left)....keep reading

  1. Some Hints on The Use of Weights for Health (1899)
    George Elliot Flint
    Some Hints on The Use of Weights for Health &##x28;1899&##x29;

    MOST of us know that exercise increases the size and strength of the muscles, quickens the circulation, stimulates the heart, and improves the digestion. It is my purpose, rather than to extol the well-known and multifarious benefits of proper exercise, to show that even delicate persons can easily obtain by cultivation extraordinary health and extraordinary strength.

    Physical man is entirely animal, and he absolutely requires a certain amount of vigorous exercise or he will degenerate. Compare the figure of a house dog that does not run about much with that of an active, trained animal that follows either a bicycle or a horse for a few hours each day. Both may be of the same breed, but their shape is quite different. One has a fat, heavy body with very slender and poorly muscled legs; the other has a contracted belly, a deep, powerful chest and remarkably well-developed limbs.

  1. U.S. Navy Academy Physical Fitness (1962)
    U.S. Navy Academy Physical Fitness &##x28;1962&##x29;

    [66 pages] Physical training covers many varied and useful activities. The subjects and areas of training treated in this publication can be used with gratifying and beneficial results. The limitations necessarily imposed by the scope of the field call for a selection of activities that are practical, easily executed and administered. All of the activities treated herein possess value for the attainment and main tenance of that high level of fitness and mental alertness so vital to us as individuals and as a nation.

    LT Joseph O. Fournier, USN, who prepared this manual, has been assigned by the Navy to the Physical Education Department of the United States Naval Academy. During LT Fournier's fourteen years of duty afloat, he has assisted in the promotion of weight training and general fitness programs aboard ship. He is graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in the field of Physical Education, earning Varsity letters in Football and Crew, of whic...keep reading

  1. The Theory and Practice of Boxing
    Professor Alex Austin
    The Theory and Practice of Boxing

    The undoubted popularity of boxing renders eulogy on the part of its advocates superfluous; its utility is unquestioned and its advantages widely recognized. The practice of pugilistic arts is a splendid mental and physical exercise: mental in that it fosters and develops pluck, determination, coolness, nerve and evenness of temper; physical, in gifting its votaries with strength, activity, health, suppleness of limb and grace of bearing. There may be differences of opinion on the suppression of the prize ring, but there can be nothing but honor and praise for the noble art of self defense....keep reading
