- A New Approach... To The Problem of Neck Injuries in Sports (1976)

"Injuries to the neck are the most common cause of death in football ... but, until recently, no practical method of development existed for this important segment of the body. To the extent that the muscles and connective tissues of the neck and shoulders can protect the neck against injury, this problem has now been solved... in a simple, practical and realistic manner.
The muscles of the neck and shoulders are perhaps the easiest muscles in the body to develop... when they are provided with direct exercise; the problem has been that there was no practical method of providing such direct exercise. The exercises that have been available were clumsy, difficult to perform, uncomfortable, and sometimes even dangerous... in short, previously existing exercises for the neck were not practical; and, as a result, this important section of the body has been largely ignored."...keep reading

- Body-Building and Self-Defense (1962)

[148 pages] This book is not intended to be an encyclopedia of bodybuilding and self-defense techniques. There are many excellent books, both basic and advanced, on judo, scientific unarmed combat, body-building, and weight-training. This is a basic book for beginners of any age. It will take you some time to master even the simpler techniques, but they can do wonders for you. They will not make you a champion weight-lifter, ready for the Olympics; they will not qualify you for a black belt in judo. But give them a chance. Mastery of these methods-by means of regular training and practice-can give you enough self-confidence and ability to handle almost any situation you're likely to encounter. Faithful training with weights can give you the appearance and muscular power you want....keep reading
- Molding a Mighty Arm (1930)

[72 pages] EVERY day as I grow older, I believe more than ever that the impressions created in our youth form an indelible mark upon our minds. Throughout the years dating from my boyhood into manhood, I have always looked upon the arm as the indicator of a man's physical strength and ability. While I know it is only one of the many parts that go to make up a perfect body, on the other hand what use is a strong body without a pair of equally powerful arms? Just as much use as a derrick with a weak hoist. It is no use talking. I am just as much impressed today with a strongly built arm as ever I was in my imaginative youth. It is the first thing that catches the eye....keep reading

- Of Grippers and Godzillas
The grip is a good place to start. When I was growing up I'd purchased "sporting goods store" grippers (we called 'em "castanets" because they were so easy to "click") and my Dad even gave me a "gripper" which had indentations for your fingers like a fancy pistol grip...but it was really just a chunk of rubber......keep reading

- Indian Club-Swinging and One, Two and Three Club Juggling (1900)

"The object of this book is first, to introduce a simple nomenclature for club-swinging and club juggling; second, to present the work in such a way that it can be given on the gymnasium floor; third to provide exercises for those that care to practice advanced club- winging and juggling.
I have tried to explain and arrange the work so that a novice might take up club-swinging and juggling from the very beginning. This book contains exercise which I have taught to my pupils and practiced my self. It can be relied upon as practicable."...keep reading
- Indian Club Exercises (1869)

'The following articles on Indian club training were published over several issues of 'The Riverside Magazine for Young People' in late 1869 and early 1870. The date accompanying each section corresponds to the original issue that it appeared in. While a few folks may be familiar with the initial entry, almost no one is aware that there were additional articles in the series. To my knowledge, this is the first time that all of these articles have been collected together in one place in the near century and a half since they were originally written....keep reading

- Steve Pulcinella #10: So I Became a Strongman
[3 pages] One day I noticed a small ad for a strongman contest in the back of Powerlifting USA magazine that was taking place in Fredricksburg, VA. Now this may not sound so exciting these days but back in 1992 the sport of strongman was non-existent in this country, the sport was still heavily active in Europe but I had never seen one anywhere else before. It had a log lift, keg loading, farmers walk and a medley event and I was excited to give this a try so I immediately signed up....keep reading

- Improving Your Bench Press(1992)

[10 pages] Check out this little-known bench press course from one of the strongest men of all time.
"...It may be enough for a novice and he or she will steadily develop more strength as they go along. The advanced bodybuilder or powerlifter, however, has refined his or her techniques in say the bench press and years of lifting have given them a high level of power especially in the arms, shoulders and back. It will therefore take a great deal of work to jar their strength/power into new growth."...keep reading

There's no name and no date on it but my guess is likely late 70's or early 80's. Either way, if you want to add some extra poundage to your bench press, this aptly-named course contains a great routine and some effective training tips for making that happen....keep reading
